Background

How did Lyric Pad start?
I was playing in an Acoustic Duo at the time (drums, acoustic guitar and two voices) that played covers. We used folders of lyrics during our performances on music stands. This meant at the start of every gig we would try and put the folders in some semblance of a set order and if we had a request during the gig it took ages to find the right page. There had to be a better way..... I originally wrote Lyric Pad for my own personal use and it was very basic at the start, but other people seemed interested in the app as well.... The rest is history.

When did Lyric Pad start
Lyric Pad was first sold on Google Play in May 2011

Who is the Developer
A musician by the name of Daniel Neilsen who hails from Australia. Dan plays guitar and bass guitar in several bands and also runs a small recording studio as a hobby. He is actually a Quantity Surveyor by profession and develops Lyric Pad in his "spare" time (yeah... who has spare time??)

Versions

What versions of Lyric Pad are available
There was originally three versions of Lyric Pad. Full, Free and Website. The website version has been depreciated and is no longer available.

What is the difference between full and free versions?
The free version is available as a demo so people can try out the app before purchase. It is not designed for continued usage and has some limitations which include:
  • Demo version text written in Lyrics Display
  • Max of 5 songs only listed in song menus
  • Search facilities disabled
All automation, scripting, menu systems, backing track playback, etc is all fully functional so users can try before they buy.
The Full version has no limitations.

When I run Lyric Pad it seems to be the free version?
It is possible to have both the Free version and the Full version installed at the same time. I strongly advise that you uninstall the free version to avoid confusion.

I own a copy of the Website version of Lyric Pad and would like to update to the latest version

Purchasing / Compatibility

How much is the full version?
Less than a pack of guitar strings. At AU$6.50 it is the cheapest piece of professional music equipment you will ever buy

I cant remember my Google Play account details. Can you help?
Sorry but no. Google is very strict about its security and developers like me simply do not have access to that information. In fact, when someone makes a purchase the only information I know about the person is what state and country they are from. No addresses, no emails, no names, etc

Can I install Lyric Pad on my Kindle Fire
Lyric Pad will work fine on Kindle Fire but you will need the google play store app installed on your Kindle to be able to install Lyric Pad. It is possible for you to install google play on your Kindle as other users have reported to me that they have done so, but I do not know how.

Why is Lyric Pad not on the Amazon app store?
Lyric Pad was on the Amazon app store for a short time. Amazon sold a number of copies and then refused to pay me as I would not supply an American Tax File Number (I am not from America). Because of this I removed Lyric Pad from the Amazon app store.

Can I install Lyric Pad on my iPad, PC or other non-android device
For the typical level user the answer is no. Lyric Pad will only run on the Android OS.
Advanced users know that emulators such as bluestacks can be installed on PC/Mac.

The Website

My user account no longer works on the website?
The Lyric Pad website was victim to a hacker in Oct 2016. As a precaution the entire website including all databases were completely removed and a new website was created from scratch. Feel free to make yourself a new user account.

My Google Play user account does not work on your website
You need to create a user account on the Lyric Pad website. We have no access to your google play account data.

Do I need a user account on the Lyric Pad website?
Only if you want to post on the forums. There is absolutely no other benefit of having a Lyric Pad website user account.

Pedals and Controllers

What controllers and pedals work with Lyric Pad?
Any bluetooth controller that sends keystrokes to your android device should work. This includes keyboards, mice, remotes and of course, pedals.

Which pedals are recommended?
I personally do not use any pedals but lots of other users do. Popular choices are Airturn and Pageflip Cicada pedals

What can I do with a bluetooth controller
This page from the manual shows the options that can be linked to each of your controls. www.lyricpadapps.com/manual/extcontrol.html

Installation / Reinstallation / Updating / Uninstalling

How do I install it?
  • Open the google play store app on your device (Not the website, the app)
  • Browse to the Lyric Pad. store listing
  • Press the Buy button
  • This will purchase and install the app, it will only take a couple of seconds as it is not a large app

How do I reinstall?
Same process as installing except that when you are logged in to google play on the app and your account owns a copy of Lyric Pad then the Buy button will be replaced with an "Install" button. Press this to reinstall.

How do I update?
Open the google play store app and then you can either:
  • In the menu go to "My Apps"
  • Find Lyric Pad and press the update button
OR;
  • Browse to the Lyric Pad. store listing
  • Find Lyric Pad and press the update button

Will updating, uninstalling or reinstalling harm my Lyric Files or Set Lists?
No, The files will not be altered or removed from your device.
You can uninstall and reinstall Lyric Pad and your files will not be harmed at all.

Files and Backups

Where are Lyric Pads files stored
Lyric Pad uses a set of paths to store its files and the location of these paths changes from device to device because each device will tell Lyric pad where its best location for these files should be.
These paths are created the first time Lyric Pad is run and are situated in the /LyricPad/ directory with the subdirectories of /LyricPad/Lyrics, /LyricPad/SetLists, /LyricPad/backing.
Common locations of the /LyricPad path is
/sdcard/LyricPad
/extsdcard/LyricPad
/m/sdcard/LyricPad

Permissions
The lyric Pad files need to be in a path where Lyric Pad has read/write permissions. Otherwise any creation or savings of files will fail. For this reason we strongly recommend using the default LyricPad directories

How can I back up my data?
You can copy your entire LyricPad directory. This is all of your LyricPad data.

Where should I back up to?
Somewhere off your device. It is quite likely for a mobile device to fail and they are very easily dropped or broken at gigs. Always keep a backup of your files elsewhere. I personally recommend setting up an autobackup to dropbox (cloud storage) so if the worst ever happens you can reinstall your data easily. (Refer to Tips and Tricks forum for setup instructions)

My device is broken and I want to get my files back...
Sorry, but without a backup there is nothing anyone can do.

Other Common Questions

I am new to Lyric Pad, what is the easiest way to use automation (scrolling) with my lyrics?
I strongly recommend using intelligent non-scripted automation. With this method Lyric Pad will determine the best start time and scroll speed to best suit the lyric file based on the number of lines displayed on the screen, the number of lines in the file and the duration of the song. To use this method you use the @!duration script tag to specify the song duration in the first few lines of the file.
@!duration 03:45
The @!pause tag can also be used with this method.

It would be great if I could press open song and the menu would be where I last used it
Enable the option other display / open list to last song

I would like to open the song but have the backing track in a paused state
Enable the option other display / Backing Track Start Paused

Scrolling through the song list is time consuming, is there a better way?
Try enabling the A-B or A-C submenu in options other display / sub-menu type.
This will be much faster on stage

When I export my word docs to text files and open them in Lyric Pad the characters do not line up
This is because the character sizes in the font are different widths. To get them to line up perfectly make sure you use a monospaced font in word (eg. courier new) and then use the monospace font in Lyric pad. This way your formatting will remain perfect.
